CLASSICAL HALLUCINATIONS

COMPETITION ENTRY
*POEMS BY LUKE JANZEN
IN COLLABORATION W/ LUKE JANZEN & LISA KUHNHAUSEN
WINTER 2020

Analyzing and reinterpreting the formal signatures of the existing buildings on the site, this series of hospitality buildings re-imagines classical geometries into digitally fabricated textures. Playing with scale and material, the design encourages visitors to become hyper-aware of the formal qualities of the historic city around them.

Service Center

re-emerging from the city of rubble and lost structures
shrouded within a new grove of figs and olives
proceeding through a worn path that still hears echoes of madonna della stella

footsteps softly echo and murmurs wander here to there
washes of gray and silver with touches of yellow ocher
rough punctures wash light through the enclosure

curiously opening a remnant door
where memories are filtered through warped dreams
morphing them into new contexts yet to be seen

Restaurant

emerging into a field of wise flora  wading through their secrets
inside, patrons gather round a tavola
amongst the chatter and clinking of silver
the food reveals its wisdom
infused with the memories of past ora di cenas

Bathhouse

loose water drips and light shimmers through the curtain
nimble weary toes sink themselves into a vast pool
watching spotted groves that flow into infinite planes

Suite 01

brushing curious fingers over carved remnants
stepping through their gateway and gazing towards the rolling hills
while three sentinel rocks watch over its temporary tenants

Suite 02

the olive trees rustle in the wind
as one rests between the remnants
gazing towards the ruins old friends

Suite 03

walking along the mountain spine, holding the ruin closer
inside, passing through garden and stone
sinking into rising mist, watching the sun begin to slumber
