Using plaster as a surrogate for concrete, different experiments tested how different ways of breaking could be generative to space and form. At the core of this research is a questioning of what we consider raw materials and the labor and energy-intensive refining processes involved in preparing materials for building. The second stage of this research was a case study. A generic reinforced concrete building - one of the most common building types worldwide - was modeled to scale in plaster and subsequently demolished. The resulting debris were sorted, cataloged, and then reconfigured into a new structure combining methods learned from the first stage of research. The purpose of this research was to change how we view buildings and cities. While embarking on big wall climbs, climbers enter a liminal space where they are exposed to magnified natural forces like storms, wind, rain, fog, etc., through uncertain weather patterns, diminishing levels of oxygen, and the conscious or unconscious psychological effects of being in a high-risk situation. With a minimum amount of gear, the body navigates vertical space through systems of tension. Ropes and harnesses are clipped to points anchored in the rock, while the climber’s body operates by pulling on the skeleton through the tendons. Specific elements of gear, like climbing shoes, augment the body’s geometry to allow for more precise interactions with the rock. On rock walls which cannot be achieved in a single day, climbers make overnight sleeping stops using portable shelter that hangs from the rock surface. Over the years the facilities have slowly fallen into a state of disrepair. This project proposes draping the pool with a productive layer of algae tubes that purify wastewater, clean oxygen, and create bio fuel. Tapestry ExhibitMinimal wooden frames are made from 12 identical members of ash wood domino jointed together flush at the corners. These frames are then infilled with woven, hand dyed, heavy-weight cotton webbing creating a modular seating system. The woven seat is a synthesis of 6 different edges created from a continuous strip of webbing.
